Banff Here I Come!

It is finally happening… My first ever motorcycle road trip. In 4 days, on the morning Friday August 18th, 2017, my dad and I will take off on a 4 day trip to Banff, Alberta from Vancouver, British Columbia. I will be riding my Kawasaki KLR 650, which since my last post I have done a lot to, and he will be riding his Yamaha Super Ténéré.

On the first night of the trip we will be staying at my Uncles place in Vernon, BC and luckily on that first day we will get some off roaring in! The second night we will be camping at DRY Gulch Provincial Park, possibly hitting Banff that day depending on how the day goes, if not we will hit it the next day. Day 3 is a long day, where we will be camping at Big Bar Lake Provincial Park, around a 700km day that day to get there. Sadly the day after that is home time to make for an overall 2000+ km trip.

I am so excited to finally spend a good amount of time on the bike. Up until now the longest ride I have done is to Whistler, BC and back which was around 250km. I just wish I didn't have to turn around once we hit Banff… One day!!

This post is a little bit late, about a week late to be exact but that’s ok…  I am so excited to say that I have finally saved up enough money and bought myself a brand new – to me of coarse – 2008 Kawasaki KLR 650 with around 38700km on it.  I am so happy that I can now call myself a KLR owner and tell people that I own a motorcycle.  The bike is red, as you can see in the pictures below, and I absolutely love it!  I am sad to say that I dropped it twice on the day I picked it up, the first time about 10 minutes after getting it…  But it’s a dual sport, its gonna get thrown around on trails and dropped!  I really must get some crash bars on it though…  When I got the bike I was only able to put temporary insurance for 3 days on it because of money, but just in those few days I rode for probably 12 hours and I did about 200km.  I had to work one of the days so was only able to ride about 2 hours that day and the day I picked it up as well as the only free day I had I was only able to ride for about half the day.  In that riding I rode up a local mountain and rode out to a beach right before sunset.

I Did It! – One Step Closer

I’ve done it!  A few days ago I successfully completed my Motorcycle Safety Course/Lessons and it’s safe to say that I’m in love with riding…  I honestly had so much fun taking this course, the in class lessons were kind of boring as you would probably guess but I did learn some stuff.  The actual riding days on the other hand were so much fun!  Started off with 2 parking lot lessons for which most of it I was riding a Suzuki DL200(I believe), also tried out the Honda Grom which was pretty fun.

Lessons and Licence – Inching Closer to a Dream

It has been quite a while since I last posted on this blog, however my dreams are getting closer and closer to becoming a reality.  Today I booked my motorcycle safety course with the guys over at ProRide Motorcycle Training .  I will be doing a 6 day course in March of 2017, 2 days of in class safety lessons, followed by 2 days of parking lot riding, at the end of which I will take the motorcycle skills test to remove a few restrictions, and then to complete the course there will be 2 days of street riding in traffic.  I am extremely excited to take this course and finally learn how to ride a motorcycle.

What Will My First Bike Be?

I’m sure almost everyone that watches the Long Way Down & Long Way Round series dreams of owning an  BMW R1200GS, including me. Unfortunately along with costing a whole lot of money, its a whole lot of bike for a beginner.  It’s heavy, has lots of power and just isn’t really made for beginners.  Knowing this I started looking at the smaller GS bikes, including the BMW G650GS, the BMW F700GS, and the BMW F800GS. After deciding I thought these would be good bikes for me I did a little research, some people agreeing they are pretty good first bikes and others not.

The Motorcyle Shows and Movies That Created my Dream

I’ve just watched ‘Long Way Round’ and ‘Long Way Down’ for the 3rd or so time now, and the idea to write a post about the motorcycle shows and movies that inspired me and created my dream, just popped into my head.  These Shows and Movies are ones that I will never forget and will continue to watch multiple times.

-Long Way Round                                                                                                                                                 The first adventure motorcycle show that I ever watched was Long Way Round featuring Charley Boorman and Ewen McGregor.  This show was in fact the first I had ever heard about adventure motorcycles and it had me very intrigued.  I had no idea there were people out there that road around the world on motorcycles.

The Beginning of a Dream

I was around 11 or 12 years old the first time I watched the shows ‘Long Way Round’ and ‘Long Way Down’ and I have wanted to ride ever since, and even more than ride, I wanted to ride around the world.

I am now 15 and my dream has started to become a reality.  My dad has recently purchased a Yamaha Super Tenere and I have had the pleasure of being able to ride with him as a passenger.  He says that he never would have gotten an Adventure Tour bike if we hadn’t watched ‘Long Way Down’ and ‘Long Way Round’ because that is what inspired him to get one.
